P3D doctored Land photo

Believe it or not, I still get mail about Edwin Land's experiment, which
some claim is proof that the full spectrum can be obtained by mixing two
colors.

Turns out the smoking gun photo, http://www.deering.org/land.gif is clearly
doctored. A fellow sent me his photo analysis, similar to work I had
already done. We discovered:

The lower photo does show a white projected outline with some keystoning,
but the photo superimposed on this white rectangle shows no evidence of
keystoning, although it has been rotated about ten degrees clockwise to
mimick keystoning.

Best of all, when you un-rotate the lower photo, you can see it was taken
from the right of the top photo, not the left where the camera is. In
other words, the camera in the top photo could not have taken the two
slides which are supposedly projected in the lower photo.

Of course, the photographer could have set up twice for two nearly
identical shots, but why? Moreover, it suggests this "before and after"
photo was set up as an illustration, not as a photographic record. The
rotated element is clear evidence that http://www.deering.org/land.gif was
made up for illustrative purposes.

I don't doubt the Land experiment shows colorful images. Whether it
produces the full spectrum or can even be photographed is still open to
debate. Certainly we cannot use the photo above to prove either point.

Cheers,

Tom
