of our Australian corespondents. At a recent club meeting I was gifted
with a jar of Vegamite by a traveler returned from down under. What the
heck is it and what should I do with it?<<<<
G'day, Mate!
As an honerary Australian (a title bestowed upon me by many friends in
my 10 years of living "down under") I may be of some assistance.
Vegemite (or Promite in Britain) in basic terms is an extremely
concentrated beef stock paste (like the stock or bullion cubes we use).
It is very salty and strong tasting. Most Australians I know eat it with
bread and butter as a sandwich; but it can be used in soups and such as
flavoring. Personally, the most use I ever got out of a jar was to put
it out on my coffee table as a conversation piece.
