In a message dated 98-08-29 20:43:52 EDT, you write:

<< That's the question that these formulas attempt to answer. And the 1:30
rule is "close enough", until you shoot close-ups. Then it falls apart.
It predicts a number that is nowhere near the correct answer to the
question "what is too close to the camera" or, "what is too far apart."

Isn't it true that there is a relationship between the focal length of the
lens and the diagonal of the film plane? In other words a the focal length of
a 50mm lens closely approximates the hypotenuse of a 24X36mm film plane, and
the 35mm lens of a Realist approximates the hypotenuse of the 21X23mm film
plane in the Realist format. When one uses a lens with a focal length greater
than the film plane hypotenuse the images foreground and afterground tend to
look compressed, or if one were to use a lens with a focal length less than
the film plane hypotenuse the image tends to look elongated. So if one were to
use say a pair of 500mm lenses on a pair of 35mm cameras mounted on a
horizontal bar, might the apparent compression of the image tend to be
relieved somewhat by increaseing the stereo base?
Sincerely
Mark Hatfield
