Yes, it's way off for extremes, like closeups. And it doesn't work for long
lenses, either.  Use a 70mm lens or shoot closeups, and it's not even
close. But no doubt, it works for shorter lenses in many cases.

But the illustration is misleading for the purpose of discussing the 1:30
rule because it uses a log scale that favors the larger distances where the
1:30 is acceptable.  See http://www.deering.org/macro.gif instead.
