P3D B/W to color?

Dear "cronies:"
Got an interesting message from someone who is interested in stereo and
photo process in general: he posed this off-topic question
>Ah, this is a little off-topic, but I thought I'd try.
Have you or any of your cronies ever heard of a photographic add-on for
cameras and projectors called something like "Abtography"?
This was a filter and diffraction grating setup which allowed you to
encode
a color image on black and white film. If you had the corresponding unit
for the projector, you could recover color. If not, you saw black and
white.
Just curious...

Anyone know of this? I think he works in the sciences.
I told him I was only familiar w/ the stereo Chromascope.

PS: BTW: I remember see a facinating early color process in the Time/Life
photo series. It created an alluring, illusive, iridescent color effect (not unlike
a modern hologram) on metal plates. I think the example photo was of
a colorful parrot. Does anyone know of this and where I can research it?
