If your refering to the space between the images, I think this
was/is for aesthetic reasons.

Some seasoned stereocard makers recommend a slight gap between
images because it produces a pleasing "frame", when viewed in 3-D.
In alot of cases it works, but when there is a common background
in both images, I prefer butting them side by side. This gives the
3-D image the illusion of being more panoramic.

If your talking about the infinity separation, there is no standard
but the limit is governed by the the lens "total" size. Remember
a stereoscope ONLY requires a portion of the lens, since only the
centers of the whole lens have to be separated by the same infinity
separation as the stereocards.
