I understand and can appreciate your reasoning behind using the term,
but I think it's a tad confusing since, according to the three
explanations I have read so far, every camera can perceivably be a P&S.
I can set the aperture, shutter and focus on my totally manual SLR, but
I don't consider it to be a P&S by todays widely accepted definition.
Have a look at Popular Photography's P&S Follies section and you won't
see a pre-set manual camera or an expensive auto everything SLR set on
automatic. They show compact, auto everthing, no manual override self
contained units. These compact cameras are not reset when you go from
indoor to outside or into the shade (except to choose to flash or not to
flash). Our manual cameras (stereo or not) will have to be adjusted
under these circumstances. Perhaps to say they can be *automated* by
presetting the controls for one particular shooting condition (say a
nice, bright sunny day) so you can just point and shoot more adequately
describes the process. When a cloud covers the sun, you'll have to reset
your "P&S" to compensate, right? The camera can then be reset when going
indoors to be *automated* for that particular situation so you can just
point and shoot. My point is that under different conditions, you must
adjust the settings. This goes outside of my definition of a true P&S
where you would do nothing when going from outdoors to indoors. I think
we are discussing the layman's generalized term as opposed to a
photographer's descriptive term.

Just small talk.

Andrea

p.s. I guess I better make sure Santa knows I want a compact, self
contained, auto everything, no brainer camera with zoom and built-in
flash. I was just asking for a P&S before. If I'm not careful, I may end
up with a Canon EOS! {:>)
