Certainly, stereo is done for depth, but the real question is whether
the image and subject themselves are secondary to the depth. Is depth
the #1 priority in a stereo picture? Is a really crummy picture with
lots of depth way-better than a magnificient 2D image? I think not.
Depth is just one tool in the toolbox along with color, light control,
composition, etc. It adds a tool that builds on the other tools in
the toolbox. It doesn't displace the other tools, nor necessarily
dominate. But it's certainly a peer among tools.

Depth isn't wrong, it's just not the end-all, it's not the Holy Grail. IMO
Nothin' wrong with "being concerned", it just seems reasonable not to
have it possess one to the exclusion of all other aspects of photography.
Stereo photography isn't a pure superset of 2D, but it doesn't exclude
all 2D'isms either.

Absolutely! But sometimes the answer is zero, and it wouldn't have helped.
Other times it would have been great.

Exactly. :-)
