P3D Depth in stereography?
- From: Project3D@xxxxxxx
- Subject: P3D Depth in stereography?
- Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1998 05:52:46 EDT
In a message dated 4/9/98 2:10:50 am, Jon Siragusa quoted Eric Goldstein re
pictorial impact being more important than simple depth, then replied:
<<I agree with you 100% Eric. However there is one thing that is still
on my mind which was originally brought up by Greg Wageman (i think).
Why not shoot it in 2D? If your picture will have no depth given the
stereo base of your camera (and you don't want to shoot hyper, etc) then
why bother shooting it with your stereo camera, mounting it in stereo
mounts and viewing it in a stereo viewer?>>
Because we DON'T want to just mount it in stereo mounts to niew in a HAND
VIEWER! I want to include it as part of an AV sequence where I'm telling a
story. If I need to include a flat image to carry the story forward, I don't
see it as anf form of trickery. I'm perfectly honest about it being a flat
image. But it doesn't stop the rest of the show having depth and (hopefully)
meaning which is enhanced by the inclusion of the flat image!
<<Regardless of whether its a good picture or not, can a picture with
no depth be considered a stereoscopic picture? In my opinion taking
a "stereo" picture of something at infinity (with no frame, etc.) and
mounting it behind the window is hardly different than emanon selling
his field shifter box to convert TV from 2D to 3D!>>
There's ahuge difference here! Taking a distant subject with a stereo camera
and including it in the box of holiday pics or whatever else it is a part of,
will allow that subject to be viewed as part of the "set". Even if it IS flat.
If you must take the 3-D images with your stereo camera, and the flat ones
with your flat camera, you are being required by George's "Depth Police" to
carry an additional piece of equipment. What if you don't own a flat camera?
What if you only want to take one camera with you? Are you banned from taking
flat images? Of course not!
Emanon, on the other hand, is claiming something that he cannot deliver. Depth
clues from a flat image achieved easily. Now, I can easily make a flat image
from the chips from my Realist (or whatever), but I cannot EASILY get depth
clues into a flat image.
<<I'm NOT saying this shouldn't be done. I'm saying there is very
little difference.>>
err well what if the television is showing a scene in a room? The stereo
camera would give all the depth back. Emanon would still giva a flat room
behind a frame. Very little difference? I think not!
