Steve Berezin wonders about shooting a Tesla coil...
Well, I've never shot pictures of a Tesla coil, so don't blame me if
things don't work out, but one thing you might want to try is a double
exposure, taking a long exposure of the discharge from the coil in a
completely dark room, then hitting it with a flash to capture the image of
the body of the coil. if you have a manual flash, set it a stop or two
below what you'd use to take a "normal" picture, that way it still looks
as if it's in the dark. I used this method to photograph a sculpture I
made, which had LEDs on long arms which moved as the piece rotated, in
some cases i used multiple flashes to capture it in several positions at
once, "adding up" the exposures to equal the total amount of light
desired. If you don't have a manual flash, you can experiment with light
painting using flashlights or whatever.
BTW the famous picture of Tesla sitting beneath his coil with sparks
crackling all around him was made in this way. The sparks were
photographed in the dark, then the device was turned off and a daylight
photgraph made with him sitting camly in chair. It's an incredible image.
