P3D The Springsteen Prize
- From: Bruce Springsteen <bsspringsteen@xxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: P3D The Springsteen Prize
- Date: Sat, 5 Sep 1998 13:26:46 -0700 (PDT)
Well, like Rip Van Winkle, I have reawakened to the P3D world (click
your heels together 3 times and say "There's no place like Rabbit
Hash!"). I happily find that while much has transpired, nothing much
has changed...
As I indicated earlier this week, new work, restrictive interim
library schedules, and my first SSA Gamma folio (about which more
later) kept me out of the loop. I just speed-read 20 or so digests
(there should be an award for that!) and am now ready to resume the
good fight for truth, justice, and the "right" amount of depth in all
circumstances! ;-)
But first - the results you have all breathlessly waited for! We have
a winner in the competition for the coveted Springsteen Prize. That
is, we have winners. It is my sad duty to report that the homely,
impractical and by his own admission slightly facetious "Magic Disk"
has won for Tom Deering the dubious reward of a copy of my first
stereocard accepted in a PSA-sponsored exhibition, if such acceptance
ever occurs. His eagerness to win a hypothetical and perhaps
impossible object is somehow impressive, but before he begins his
characteristic crowing, here is some more information.
The judging committee has, upon reviewing the evidence, concluded that
Deering's "swoopy colored lines" in a "polar-coordinate circular slide
rule" narrowly meet the contest's cryptic criteria of human-powered,
non-Bercovitz/Spicer violating, far-point distance at least from 1
foot to infinity base calculation. This is not however first-rate
work - it is a passing grade merely. I certainly have no intention of
using the thing, and neither does anyone else I assume. Furthermore,
the conversion of Tom's rectangular, tutti-frutti Cartesian charts to
polar graphs was proposed publicly by Brian Reynolds in this forum,
prior to the unveiling of Deering's folly. Reasonable observers can
only conclude larceny is afoot.
Therefore, the Springsteen Prize is awarded jointly to Messrs. Deering
and Reynolds, as unintentional collaborators. There was only one
Springsteen Prize offered in this category (more on this later) so in
the event that the hypothetical object becomes real, each winner will
receive one half of the stereo card. It is especially droll that they
live a continent apart. What's King Solomon got that I ain't got?
There are no runners up, as there were no other submissions.
Bruce (More on this later) Springsteen
PS - I know Tom is not with us right now, and I don't see Brian
on-list much, so anyone wishing to make an acceptance speech *for*
them is welcome.
A copy will NOT be sent to the Oliver Wendell Holmes stereo library. ;-)
