Do you remember the "Encyclopedia Of Photography"? These books were sold on
a volume per month basis, and most likely in your local library. There is
one volume that talks about photographing model trains, and discusses
exactly what you are interested in doing. The apertures the article
discusses are extremely small in order to achieve maximum depth of field.
As I recall, it is somewhere around F hundred and somethying or another.

My suggestion is to look for a set of these books and read the article
about Model Train Photography. Perhaps this will help you.

Be aware, the apertures need to be precise and exact.
