In the context of the quote and discussions, I don't think the
question is so much as to whether "it" is there or not, but as
to whether it matters or not. To "correct" the meaning of the
quote (as I interpret it): "Until one can tell the difference,
there isn't one".

P.S. -
I can prepare a gourmet meal for someone who really would
rather have a big Mac (and have). Because the gourmet'ness
is done for the purpose of enjoyment, and because the person
enjoys big Mac's better, the big Mac for that person is
of higher performance in terms of the purpose intended.
Doesn't matter that it drives me crazy, but that's still
the case.
