P3D Realist f/16 Vingnetting
RE: My f3.5 Realist vingnetting at f/16....
Michael Kersenbrock says "It's common. The f3.5's often (mostly?) have
vignetting when stopped down
fully." Hmm... f/22 would be stopped down fully, f/16 is not...
Kersenbrock adds, "One of the reasons to use a Kodak (sorry, couldn't
resist). :-)." Wise guy! But, seriously folks. ("Take my Realist...
Please!")... If the Realist suffers from vingnetting and the Kodak does
not, this might be enough for me to switch weapons of choice. Now I'm
really depressed.
The mighty Dr. T says (and if anyone should know, it is he) "Yes, it is
common. Most 3.5s will vignette at f16 too. There is some variation, the
source of which I have not been able to pin down. Ilex lenses strike me as
more prone to vignetting than regular 3.5s." Nope, no Ilex lenses here,
just your basic beater, econo-buy 3.5. Then he adds " I do not see
vignetting with my 2.8 at 7p.". (groan, envy, despair.)
Oh dearie me... what do to, what to do.. A 2.8 will cost me about what I
paid for the Realist plus what I could get a Kodak for. I guess I'm
destined for a life of f/11 at 1/150 (assuming the old shutters will still
do this), which has an EV of 14, about the same as f/16 at 1/60 (so my
"sunny 16" turns into a "sunny 11"), and the downside is that I've lost a
hunk o' depth of field as well. Or, I could seek cloud cover, shade,
overcast days, etc, etc.
So, list o'smart folks, any other folks support the "no vingetting with a
Kodak" claim?
Depressed in San Jose,
Michael Georgoff
