P3D 2 Ch Stereo Video

Hello P. Brandon Malloy. Welcome to p-3d and thanks for jumping in and
sharing with us about your leap.

>Are there other brave souls out there pioneering 2 channel video 3-d?

Yes there are. It is a very challenging form of 3-D to work in. There are
two major challenges with it:

1. Maintaining field (one half of a video frame) accurate sync between the
two cameras during recording, editing and playback.

2. Display form for viewing dual band video.

To maintain sync between cameras a sync pulse generator or "black burst"
generator has been used for recording and playback. I have used two Sony
Beta SP's for dual band video and they are ideal because you simply run an
RCA line from "video out" in camera "A" to "video in" in camera "B" and
maintain field accuracy between the two cameras.

Identically striped time code for both cameras is essential for editing.
Some high-end video systems use "VITC" or Vertically Integrated Time Code
as a field-accurate form of code for editing. Undoubtedly, much of the
current desktop video will have this capability.

Playback, of course, will require field accuracy. Freeviewing is good.
But there are several alternatives for viewing. One of them is to use
dual-band projection with polarizers and a silver screen. The audience
will simply use polarizing glasses as with a stereo slide show or movie.
Stereo Video Theaters with dual-band playback from 3/4" video tape have
been used in Japan along these lines.

Also, please remember that "2 Ch Stereo Video," while an extremely
challenging subset of stereography, is still 3-D and that all of the
dynamics of parallax and perception that are discussed on p-3d still apply.
Pulfrich 3-D, for example, can also be converted to 2 Ch Stereo Video.
Simply take two copies of the same Pulfrich 3-D videotape, go a frame or
two in on one, sync them up, and you have 2 Ch Stereo Video. Or, using
field-doubling and de-interlacing software, alternating field video can be
converted to 2 Ch Stereo Video.

I'm sure you will find interest from fellow p-3d'ers on this subject. So
please keep us posted on your efforts and discoveries with this unique form
of stereography.

Best!
