I disagree.
I like having separate lists. I use procmail to filter all of my
incoming mail. Each of the lists that I subscribe to gets filtered
(by the "To: " header, not by the "Subject: " header) into a separate
mailbox which I then read when I have the time. Given the time
critical nature of its contents I generally read sell-3d before I read
photo-3d, and tech-3d waits until I have spare time. I do not
subscribe to the computer 3D list. Some of the other lists I
subscribe to have higher priority than (and are read before) the 3D
lists, and some have lower priority.
There is a great tendency for people not to use appropriate subject
lines, or to change subject lines when the topic drifts. By lumping
sell-3d and photo-3d together it becomes more difficult to sort mail.
The sell-3d and photo-3d lists also serve different purposes. sell-3d
is an announcement list and photo-3d is a discussion list. Do we
really want to have discussions about what is being sold? If not, how
are you going to prevent it?
There are probably also people who subscribe to one list without
subscribing to the other (perhaps collectors who only get sell-3d, or
shooters who only get photo-3d). The only reason I subscribe to
sell-3d is for the occassional oddities (non-realist (35mm) format
cameras and viewers). If not for them I wouldn't subscribe to sell-3d
at all. By merging the lists you force people to get all the messages
that they had previously decided they didn't want.
