P3D List Manners and Filtering Folks
- From: Bruce Springsteen <bsspringsteen@xxxxxxxxx>

Late to the topic, but I've been indisposed a lot.
I use a filter. It's a rose-colored filter. As an actor, I learned
that a given piece of writing can be delivered and interpreted in
almost an infinity of ways. My rosey "filter" makes me interpret a
person's comments in the most benign way I can think of -
(misunderstanding, bad day, personal problems, poor language command,
whatever it takes). My list philosophy is "If aren't looking for it,
it's not an insult."
The only things that might ever draw flames from me are outright
bigotry, or concerted attempts to arbitrarily muzzle another's
interests, based on the complainant's *lack* of interest.
Not that I don't do teasing! "Ribbing" is poking at the peccadilloes
of a loved friend, with the implication that you enjoy their humanity.
"Roasting" is when a group gets together and "ribs" such a friend in
unison, as a group expression of such affection. George T has been
the frequent beneficiary of such tribute on this list, even if he
hasn't always realized it! ;-)
"Flaming" is a defensive, mean-spirited attempt to wound another's ego
and patch one's own. I am susceptible to that, and see this list as a
chance to develop my capacity for self-confidence without attacking
anybody else. It's hard sometimes.
Your invisible cyber-friend,
Bruce (I'll Take the Rib Roast, Please!) Springsteen
