My $0.02:
I have experimented with this myself, mostly for my amusement. It is quite simple to do
once you understand the geometry of perspective. I have "bastardized" an Ansel Adams
picture to give apparent perspective ("Ye gads!!!", I hear the groans now! <G>). Now one of
my purist friends used the term "bastardized". An unfortunate term.
I guess in a way, Andy Warhol's "Campbell Soup" or "Marilyn" works could be
considered "bastardized" versions of other works. Is it art? Hmmm. Some say so. I
tend to agree. But maybe it is like velvet Elvis paintings from TJ!!!
I guess it depends upon one's perspective of whether the ex post facto addition of
"fake 3d" is enough of a value added activity to qualify. Since I also paint landscapes
once in a while ( always non-existant places modeled on repeating geomorphic features seen in
real places), that too may qualify as art/vandalism depending upon how good one
thinks I am. Since I'm not trying to sell them, I feel more able to call it art. Perhaps if
I was trying to pay the rent, ...
I think alterations of 2d images can be "art", or fun. Who cares! When I first started 3d,
I was more interested in this than I am now. But in about 30 minutes in Paint Shop Pro 5
I just now recreated my 1st attempt at the Adams picture. I will share it with anyone
who is interested. A feeble effort can be modestly convincing. Good, well no. But heck
it my be interesting to give some projection to Grandpa's nose on a Saturday afternoon.
At one time I had thought of creating a piece of software to do this. Right now I'm doing
more on a possibly worthwhile activity: photogrammetry software to be used with my stereo
video cameras.
