P3D Re: what to shoot

OK, I will tell you what I shoot. A lot of the pictures are kids,
family, vacation, everyday activities, special occasions....
Other than that, I always keep an eye open to possibilities. When
I go for a walk or drive my car, I look around. We are surrounded
by photographic possibilities... We only need to look to see them.
So, I see things and I dream pictures. I say to myself "next time
I go for a walk around here, I should carry my Realist".
In addition, both the Detroit and the Cleveland stereo clubs have
competitions with assignments. The system of assignments is the best
way to create a clever, successful, versatile photographer, out of any
one. Because of Detroit, I ventured into unknown territory with
subjects like Neon Lights, tabletops, people at work, Spiritual,...
and many more. I enjoyed what I learned.
Here is the list of the Detroit assignments for this year:
- Cityscapes
- Kids
- Down on the Farm
- Creative Blur
- Faces
- Shadows
- Glass and Metal
I have some cityscapes, plenty of kids, some faces, but none of
creative blur, shadows or glass and metal.
Shadows? I would have never thought of taking a picture of a
shadow in 3d. So this assignment is challenging my brain. Same
with glass and metal and creative blur. (I know blur, only I call
it "failure" :-))
It is rather difficult to impose assignments to yourself. Most people
relax and just do what they know: Flowers, macros, tabletops, scenics.
The only way to get them to try unfamiliar subjects is to force them
to do it. This is what Detroit is doing to me (us). And I enjoy it
tremendously.
Note: There are still two Open assignments so people can enter their
favorite subjects, but (in Detroit) there are 7 more specific
assignments. So, only with flowers, you cannot go very far into the
competitions.
We are using the same system in our new Cleveland stereo club.
I believe members with time will appreciate this system, if they don't
already.
