P3D Competitions or Sharing?

In response to Jet 7's objection to competitions:

A lot of people don't like competitions for various reasons, but still
enjoy sharing images. Unfortunately, this is not done very often in
clubs. I set up an additional meeting night at my old 2-D club and ran
it as a Members Forum Night. It was an unstructured meeting with no club
business, just the sharing of photography. We usually started with
everyone seated and sharing images brought in. Then someone might have
some equipment or technique to talk about. Then we would split up into
smaller groups and have our own discussions or mini workshops. It was
lot of fun. I am thinking of trying it in our stereo club as we only
meet once a month now and there is not enough time to do everything in
one night. This could even be expanded to "assignments," where a topic
is set at one meeting and the results are brought back at another.
Instead of a competition environment, the assignments could be reviewed
and commented on by everyone. I found this type of casual environment
was very condusive to open discussion, especially from people who felt
uncomfortable in a competitive environment. I got to see more of what
members were doing and find out what they were interested in. This was
very rewarding to me.
