The smart-ass answer would be "Because they could be." Actually, in an age
when parlor stereoscopes were as common as TVs are today, 3D movies were a
logical extention of regular movies. Most of the experiments of the 1910s
and 1920s were not terribly successful because the technology wasn't quite
there yet, but by the 1950s, which is the era we most associate with 3D
movies, everthing was humming along pretty well. Hollywood turned to them
then as a gimmick in its fight against television.
