Although I have worked on this Imax feature, I haven't seen it in stereo
yet (Belgium doesn't have a 3D Imax yet; Gaumont is building one right now
in Antwerp).
When Ben Stassen of nWave Pictures (director and screenwriter of Thrill
Ride and Encounter In The Third Dimension) showed the left-eye-only version
of Encounter at the Imax theater in Brussels, I was amazed. Clearly, a
whole year of work paid finally off. I can only imagine what the film must
look like in stereo.
Working on this film was fun and exciting, even with all the technical
problems involved (window violation, strobing, ghosting, screen resolution,
bad catering, etc.).
92% percent of the film is computer generated (the biggest part was done by
Movida, Brussels and the rest by Trix, Brussels). Ben Stassen has been
working for years with these two companies who are specialized in making
motion simulator films (Devil's Mine Ride, Cosmic Pinball, Secrets Of The
Lost Temple, Virtual Time Machine, etc.). For those of you who'd like to
know how a ride is made, visit: http://www.ddeg.be/magic

Encounter In The Third Dimension is only the start, currently Trix is
working on another exciting stereo Imax adventure. For the moment, the
working title is "Aliens" and the story is about E.T.'s taking over an
attraction park.
Again, rides are the main attraction in this film. This film will feature
alot of digital characters and awesome stereo effects (including window
violations).
