Michael Kaplan
"Like Alice Through the Looking Glass: History Theory and Practice of 3-D
Architectural Photography"
Frank Lloyd Wright wrote that "the only photograph that can be made of
architecture is 3-dimensional." Indeed, stereo conveys spatial and
textural information absent in ordinary, flat photography. This lecture
surveys the history, theory and practice of stereographic representation
of architecture, illustrates its advantages and potential with
full-color, three-dimensional slides of buildings from ancient Greece to
contemporary Los Angeles.
A veteran stereo photographer, Michael Kaplan is Professor of
Architecture, Emeritus, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where
he taught architectural design and theory. Winner of the AIA Education
Honors Award in 1991, he is a licensed architect and has lectured and
published widely on cultural aspects of design. His stereoscopic lectures
have been presented at The University of Michigan (1997), North Carolina
State University (1997), The University of Kentucky (1996), Northern
Alabama AIA (1996), The University of Pennsylvania (1995) and The
University of Tennessee (1994). A founding partner in View*Productions,
Mr. Kaplan has embarked on a project to publish examples of 20th century
architecture in 3-D on View-Master reels.
Marilyn Morton
"Representing Architecture: The Social Stereoscope"
Nearly every prominent structure in existence between 1854 and 1940 was
photographed in three-dimensions and published commercially on stereo
viewcards. This survey examines the images, together with the texts that
appear on the rear of each viewcard, providing a unique appraisal of how
we described our built environment. The original viewcards have been
transferred to slides and are projected in stunning stereo.
Marilyn Morton Ph.D. received a doctorate in interdisciplinary studies
from Emory University, Atlanta, for a dissertation entitled "The Social
Stereoscope: Issues in American Cultural History." She teaches at the
Atlanta College of Art and is a founding member of the Atlanta
Stereoscopic Association. Her lectures on cultural aspects of stereography
have been presented at UC/Berkeley, The International Stereoscopic Union
(Frankfurt, Germany) and Emory University. "Representing Architecture" has
been presented at The University of Michigan (1997), North Carolina State
University (1997), The University of Kentucky (1996), The University of
Pennsylvania (1995) and The University of Tennessee (1994).

"Wright and the 3rd Dimension"
This lecture briefly surveys the history, theory and practice of
stereographic representation of architecture, illustrates its advantages
and potential with full-color, three-dimensional slides of buildings from
