and do a search for lucid dreaming. About 3 to
6 months ago there was a big discussion (though
I can't recall the newsgroup, rec.arts.sf.*
perhaps).

  Anyway, there was a poster who does lucid
dreaming because he/she suffers from horrible
dreams where he/she (I forget) dies EVERY NIGHT.
This person does lucid dreaming to prevent the
terror it causes. He/she still is horribly killed
every night but doesn't wake up in a sweat with
heart pounding, etc.
