Transfer gel filter effects to film base by photographing the gels on a
lightbox. ( see part 1) Mount your slides as you normally would. Cut the
effects images and put them in albions or lay loosly on lightbox. Try
matching some of your images to the effects chips. Keep the effects
images full frame as you will need to move them around behind the 5-p
image to obtain desired effect. Tape one chip onto the back of the
mounted image and check the image through a film loop or viewer. Does
the effect match up with the image? You should not be able to see
evidence of the effect chip ( except for surreal colors etc.) as the
chip is displaced from the origional image slightly, which reduces grain
and detail in the effect chip. Tape the other chip to the back of the
mount as you did the first one. Take a cardboard foldover and place over
the effects chips and tape the whole thing together. To review we have
an image in a mount, then effects films taped to the rear, followed by a
cardboard foldover backing. ( solid color effects can be put in albion
mounts with aperatures wider than the image, and taped to the mounted
image) Part 3 will explain how to create specific film gels for color
correction, graduated sky, vignetting for portraits, surreal color,
density changes, even polarization effect! I have started an extensive
library of " effects on film" so I can apply a desired effect to almost
any image. I will also explain some mistakes to avoid. I will be showing
some of these images to Dr. T tomorrow, and if he thinks this process is
a fluke.....well...then I really know I'm onto something good here! :-)
