Ahhh, I see the ebay thread hasn't died out yet and there is still
interest! :-) Okay here goes, with the first post.

Of course placing a bid early doesn't reveal your maximum but
what it does is reveal your hand in the same sense as playing
poker. They first have a clue that your interested in the item.
Second, they can bid early on and see if they beat your maximum.
If they don't, they have a couple of days to decide if they want
to resubmit a bid to try to BEAT your maximum. Why give them
that chance! Why not use the advantage ebay affords you with
sniping.

The probability of this is low.
