P3D Re: Passing of a comrade
Stereo Photography lost one of its champions this week. Robert T.
"Bud" Shipler, born August 1914, died on Tuesday evening. Bud was a
founder and long-time officer of the Utah Stereo Society, who
mentored the stereoptical sensibilities of a long stream of friends
and admirers for half a century. As a high-school part-time cleaning
boy at Shipler Photo in Salt Lake, I first saw the stereo gleam in
Bud's eyes forty years ago as he showed his potential converts his
passion, patiently explaining the concept of the stereo window or
demonstrating mounting techniques. I caught the bug then and have
never lost it. Bud was personal friend to many of the early
adopters. I remember when he brought Harold Lloyd to town to speak
to the Society. He owned three of the rumored ten or fewer (I can't
remember the count--maybe Bob Maxey or George Themelis can recall) of
the fabled Custom Realist f/4.5 cameras at some time or other. Bud
hadn't been able to drive, of late, due to the advancing cancer, but
I treasure the times we spent reviewing his photographic experiences
and his stereoptical savvy as I drove him to the Society meetings
down in Orem or Provo. His obituary notes that he was a "world class
photographer," and was noted for his honesty, good morals and
integrity. He is survived by Bethel, his wife of 56 years, and his
children. Keep both eyes open, Bud!
