Might be a good idea not to use this method if there are people in the 
photo (as I'd assume there to be with your photos) who'd like their eyes
to continue working.  I'm not sure of the laser's rating, but I still 
wouldn't want to point it at anybody's face, and on a camera it may 
be hard to keep under tight control.  Even if it doesn't cause permanent
damage, they might not like being blinded by a laser.

Maybe if something is put in front of it to diffuse it a bit, but still
be focussed enough for your purposes?  If they're close enough where
the focus setting is "critical", might not just a penlite sort of flashlight
work (with maybe a microswitch-lever screwed to the side for easy on/off)?

Or better yet, stick with using fixed DOF settings w/flash (that work?).
