This is a very good feature (common to many P&S
cameras) because it won't be fooled by a closeup
of a light skinned person wearing a white shirt or
a black cat on a black leather couch like a normal
autoflash sensor.
Though getting popped in the face with full power
flash (even a small one) is kind of disconcerting.
My wife's Canon P&S does this. Seems real bright
when you are in a dark room and have large pupils.
