P3D Rear projection/scanner

The ISU convention in Interlaken,Swtzerland '87 had the entire program
rear projected(except for a 3D TV broadcast). It was great!
    How about this: On a scanner, can you place a translucent screen on
the flatbed and project a slide on it to copy a large image or is it like
a photocopy machine where a traveling, blinding light will totally flood
out the image?         George
