Actually, a 2D slide can be seen without a viewer simply by
holding it in front of a light source. A medium format slide is no
smaller than a 2 1/4" contact print, and not much harder to view. 32
ASA films, when introduced in the mid 1950s, were advertised as being
fast enough for box cameras and suitable for direct viewing. In viewing
an image this small, a lot of detail is lost. 35mm slides can be seen
without a viewer, but at 1 x 1 1/2" are just too small for recognition
of all but the largest subjects. 3D slides really need a viewer,
because the're even smaller (smaller than 1" x 1"), and very few people
can diverge their eyes enough to freeview such a mounted pair.
