No George, most of the famous Impressionist painters used shadows that
contained the complimentary colour of the object.

And, in any case, it's not actually the _shadows_ (which ARE black) but the
colour of the light around the shadows that gives the effect...

(If you recall, the exhibit had a red lamp and a blue/green lamp casting the
shadows)
