As Ron Labbe pointed out, polarization is the key to how LCD devices work.
When an electric charge is applied to the liquid crystal, it becomes
polarized. If a polarizing filter is laid over the liquid crystal, the area
becomes opaque. Apparently the folks at IMAX have arranged the LCD lenses
so the polarization is at right angles for the left and right eyes, so with
polarizers over the projection lenses, the system works no matter what.
This also probably improves extinction. Pretty clever, eh?
