>>What kind of lenses did the Realist Custom have? Were they the
same as any
of the ones in the regular 2.8's, or different?
>>And, do the Olden hybrids have the same lenses as a Custom?
I am fortunate to have and to have had several Realist custom
Cameras and a couple of "Olden Specials". The "rare earth" lenses
on on the Custom lens board were different from the last run of
Realist 2.8 (Germany) lenses. They differed in both the lens board
and some features of the lenses. The Realist 2.8 (Germany) lenses
were so marked and had the aperture marks on the "sidewall" (as Jon
put it). The "Custom" lens board has the marks on the "Tread" for
easier use with the Steinheil wide angle lenses. I have had Olden
cameras with each type of lens board. That is what makes buying a
Custom so tricky. You can get a camera with a "Custom" lens board
and lenses, but which is not a Custom.
In my experience, the lenses on the "Custom" lens board have a
different lens coating which can become mottled and cause lens flare.
Also, these lenses are more prone to need a warming filter than the
Realist 2.8 (Germany) lenses.
At the present time, I have a beautiful 'Olden" Realist 2.8 (Germany)
camera. It is marked "Olden" on a custom style lens cover. The
camera has the large rewind nob (like a Custom) but does not have the
shine Custom finish nor the "Count-up" exposure dial. it also has
the regular covering. Other features on this camera include a
beautifully machined hot shoe contact so that modern flash units can
be used as well as "factory" felt to stop the infamous light leak. I
would rather shoot with this camera than any "Real" Custom.
Does anyone else have experience with "special" Olden Features?
