Thanks to Southern California Correspondent Lawrence Kaufman for filling
in the blanks on the Hollywood Exhibition.
To paraphrase an old popular song "Stereo Cards are busting out all
over"
For the first time in many decades stereo card makers outnumber those who
are making stereo slides in the Stereoscopic Society of America,
according to the SSA Membership Secretary Shab Levy. The SSA has been in
existence since 1919 but no records are available on the breakdown on
card makers vs slide makers before 1978.
More and more International Stereo Exhibitions are beginning to realize
the benefits of having a card section in their
exhibitions. The latest one to include cards is the Hollywood Exhibition
(SSA Member David Thompson was the Chairman of the Card Section) By my
count there are now six former "stereo slides only" exhibitions which
have a card section. Now if we can just convince the Holdouts- Detroit,
The Southern Cross, and the DGS (German Stereo Society) to include cards
everyone will benefit. There are also three card only exhibitions and it
is hoped that this number will also increase. It doesn't take a big club
or group to organize and sponsor a stereo card Exhibition. Dick Twichell
(who lives 1008 miles from Columbus) and I are the "committee" for the
SSA. Are you listening Bruce????
Can the 1st Milwaukee International Stereo Card Exhibition be to far
away???
There are also many other indicators that show that stereo card
activities are on the increase, besides the SSA. The PSA has a very
active stereo card circuit and is looking for new members. It is expected
that there will be a Stereo Card Sequence Exhibition in the PSA in the
near future. Then there is the North America-Germany Stereo Card Circuti
(NAG) that was developed to allow stereo card makers in both countries to
establish communications with those in the other country. This has
proved itself in the past three years and is especially valuable for
helping the stereographers in the eastern part of Germany to realize they
are not alone.
There is also the Amateur Photographic Exchange Club (APEC III) They
are doing a wonderful job of promoting stereo cards and are always
seeking new members. If you would like to start a collection of
contemporary stereo cards then this is the place for you. The contact is
frequently listed on P3D.
For many years the International Stereoscopic Union (ISU) paid no
attention to stereo cards. That is no longer the case. The ISU Stereo
Card Circuit, chaired by Walter Dubronner of Ubstadt Germany is now
making its first round around the world. This is a true international
circuit open to ISU members world -wide. Not to let the chance pass for
a great Stereo Exhibition ISU will sponsor its first ever International
Stereo Card Exhibition, chaired by Klaus Kemper of
Nideggen Germany , at the ISU Convention in Lindau Germany in September.
Send me an e-mail if you would like an entry form. "Be a part of
history, participate in the first ever ISU International Stereo
Exhibition"
What I find so interesting is that many young (in their 40s and under)
stereographers are discovering the charm of a well made stereo card. Now
if I can convince them to stop shooting color and having them printed on
RC paper & start shooting Black & White and having them printed on Fiber
based paper, so that in 30-40 years there will be a record of what they
have done!!!!!
Of course there are several Senior Stereographers who are now making
stereo cards. PSA Vice President Al Sieg, Otto Walasek ,PSA President
Pauline Sweezey, who saw the need for stereo card recognization and asked
the late Warren Callahan to start a PSA Stereo Card Circuit in 1993,and
"The Godfather of Stereo" Paul Wing. Paul made stereo cards many years
ago and has come back to this some what obtuse art form and is now
entering Stereo Card Exhibitions . His rejects are better than most
"best efforts" that we see today.
If there are any stereo card makers out there who think they are "alone"
and want to participate in stereo card activities
please contact me off line.
