They actually take three shots. All three are interleaved behind the
lenticular layer to give a smoother result. A lenticular print with two
images can only be seen in 3d from a small range of positions, the "sweet
spot." More images gives you a wider choice, and if you rock the print
from side to side you get a little parallax shift. The older Nimslo
cameras took that further with four lenses. Take a look at

of *that* principle. :-)
I'm afraid I can't help with your other questions. I've not used a
beamsplitter, and I too would like to get lenticular 'specials' without
hacking off the odd limb.
