****** Now we're talking... All forms of stereo to be included in an
exhibition can be shown by projection. That's a recognition of what's
practical for groups of people gathered in a room. Digital has the advantage
that copies are exact duplicates so can be spread farther and wider with
less cost, say the same images to 100+ stereo clubs around the world at the
same time. Of course there is additional cost if you have to
slide-photograph the stereo cards for projection, or transfer digital to
film, and one needs a versatile projection system to handle both slides and
digital media... Still, this universal sort of solution sounds like it has
real promise for the future.

I don't see print views as being 50 times slower or less effective in
presentation though. Those with freeviewing skills can circulate prints
rapidly and effectively, especially if multiple copies exist, which makes
sense for large groups of people. There is a challenge however if a viewing
device is required. A group of persons would need many viewing devices in
order to make it effective. But freeviewing as a skill should be encouraged
within any stereo club, and having prints circulating in a freeviewable
cross-eyed format would be a skill builder as well as being fun. Parallel
prints of large scale are simply impractical and should be avoided unless
*lots* of viewing devices are available.

Speaking of exhibitions and the future, isn't it high time there was a
digital stereo circuit of some sort? Digital stereo images are incredibly
fun to work with and versatile as a creative medium. In a digital exhibition
one could have very creative categories almost impossible to other formats,
though one can always photograph or print a digital image for either of the
other presentation methods. However a digital only exhibition would have
several inherent advantages. Transmission of images to all parts of the
world is extremely easy and cost effective. Judging can be done both in
stereo club meetings and directly on internet web pages. Judges would be the
viewing audience primarily, though some arrangement of including a special
panel of judges could be arranged and some formula of balancing the general
public response with the panel of judge's responses. Such an exhibition
could involve any and/or all stereo clubs worldwide with categories pitting
club against club, as well as individual categories.

The images could be entered during a particular time period, and evaluated
by the public for another time period, ending with a final event coordinated
with many different groups. Perhaps some very interesting prizes could be
added for incentive.

Winning entries could go on to be entered into other circuits of either
slides, prints, or other digital contests. The more often images win, the
better they are (in some sense), and the more general interest they present
to a viewing public from outside stereo active groups. This would encourage
a building of marketable value in stereo image exchanges on a commercial
level. It would open doors to develop and encourage new interests both
generally and as channelled through local stereo clubs doing their own local
promotions.

Assuming a digital exhibition to be possible merely by choosing to do it,
what really creative and wild categories would *you* like to enter some of
your images under? All ideas welcome. (soft target date, summer of '99???)
