P3D What was I thinking????

It was a nice dream while it lasted... I was so happy with the
illusion that I had control over my PC.... 

I tried to use my HP PhotoSmart Scanner and the program will load
and then unload without any explanation.  I ran diagnostic tests
and the scanner appears to be working fine.  In a panic (because
I have to get a newsletter out on Monday and I NEED to scan a couple
of stereo slides) I tried to use my WinCam digital camera.  Nope!
No such luck.  The program refuses to load with this cryptic message:
"A device attached to your system is not functioning"

AGGGRRRHHHH!!!!

I spent hours and hours checking everything out.  There is nothing
wrong anywhere else.  Every device appears to be working fine.
No hardware conflicts.  Everything is straight and nice.  My printer
is working.  My flatbed scanner is working.  BUT, my HP film scanner
and digital camera programs do not load.  I removed and reinstalled
the software.  NOTHING!  I am totally frustrated.  I need to get the
newsletter out and I need to have the pictures in it.  I think I will
sneak into my wife's computer and install PhotoSmart there.  She is
a bit paranoic when I am near her computer (I don't blame her!) so 
I will need to do it late at night...

There!  My faith has evaporated.  Apparently, I must have done 
something to Windows (deleted a file when cleaning the hard drive?) 
that causes this problem.  But there is no help anywhere via Windows
documentation.  The "experts" at work don't know what to say...

I just read in USA Today an article about frustrated computer users
and problems with brand new computer equipment and software.  The 
average Joe has absolutely no control over his PC, and he is afraid
of it.  Frustrating problems have increased in frequency because of 
the urge to get out cheap systems fast enough.  The world is going
to hell if you ask me...
