the browser was not completing that final pass (on interlaced JPEGs), and
leaving all the images at the preliminary low-quality rendering.  We looked
for some kind of preference setting within the browser, and could find
none.<

Just one possible guess--are you sure your friend's computer is set for
full 24 bit color? Or is it perhaps set for 8 bit (245 color) images?
