The gauge is a set of pieces of flat metal that are of calibrated
thickness and are usually in a set (and mechanically attached
to each other) used for adjusting things like the gap distance
in spark plugs. The metal also usually is a springy variety.

So if the appropriate thickness one is chosen and ground to the
right size (width primarily), one can have an adjustment
tool of precision thickness and have it inexpensively.

I've only done a few reels and with those few, the insertion tool
worked fine.  With that tool there is no rubbing of the
image other than when it's pulled out.  But you know better
than I about that method.

Using a latex glove sounds good though, it's almost
impossible (for me) to do without one with realist-format
compatible slides.
