P3D Measuring Camera Base

Can someone explain to me how the base of the camera is measure.Is it
the distance between the two lenses,the distance from center of lens to
center of the lens or outer edge of lens to outer edge or something
completely different.Also what is the largest exceptable base if
shooting between 4 to 8 feet in distance.
