This is in error (wrongly changed from a different formulation), it
should of course be:
... moving the lenses as _far_ as possible from the pictures, while
keeping vision sharp.

That will depend first on focal length and (horizontal) format of the
pictures. But also on lens design (single or multiple), and then on
the spectator, for the distance from the eye to the stereoscope
lenses varies (wearing glasses or not, anatomy of orbit).
This is a question for Tech-3D where the optical experts maybe could
answer.
