  Frosted drafting mylar is supposed to work well.
The stuff frosted on both sides is supposed to be
even better. In both cases you want it far enough
from the slide that the grain is out of focus when
you focus on the slide.

  The ultimate material appears to be the cobalt
glass that Hugo uses in his Comby and other viewers.
Next best might be opal flashed glass sold by Edmund
and some photo dealers (used to make light boxes
for example).
