Darn it!  I really cannot sing my favorite song for you :-)
The $500 is a number in the minds of many.  When discussing
how much money people would be willing to pay for a modern
good quality stereo camera, many people mention this figure.
And, the irony is that there are stereo cameras much cheaper
and cameras much more expensive than this but nothing close
to this mark that will meet your requirements well.

At the low end we have used cameras from the 50s ($100 to
$200), Argus, and lenticular cameras.  At the higher end
we have the RBTs.  Perhaps you can get in contact with 
local stereo photographers in Australia (a few of them
are in photo-3d) and have them show you what is available.
