Here is a simple experiment to do:  Stick your hands in front of your
nose so that the field of view of the right eye is totally different
than the field of view of the left eye.  You will lose stereoscopic
vision but you will be able to look around as if nothing happened, even
though the two fields of view are different.  Different but complimentary,
meaning that where one ends the other one starts.  No sure what will 
happen if they were totally different (one TV channel in one eye, another
in the other). I am sure you can train your brain to only pay attention
to one channel/eye at a time.
