If one wears corrective lenses, as I do, then presumably one's
optometrist matches one's eyes for one. :-)
My prescription is due for an update, and I know for a fact that my left
eye's vision is sharper than my right eye's. This doesn't seem to cause
me any problem, nor do I notice it except when I specifically block
alternate eyes and compare. The whole seems indeed greater than the sum
of the parts.
But both my eyes produce the same *sized* image, so that homologous
points merge correctly. I imagine that some severe vision defects
(short of blindness) might still destroy stereopsis. For example, I
can't imagine that the late Marty Feldman saw in stereo!
