Well, I think you miss the point, Michael.

What could be more intellectually challenging than learning a foreign
language?

What could be more passive and brainless than watching TV?

The purveyors of the language program have not made "things easier for
their customers." They have created an advertising campaign which they
think will appeal to slothful potential customers.

"As easy as watching TV" is the paragigm of the effort that most 1999
Americans are willing to invest in a leisure activity.
