Part of the reason for the bad flicker with PAL is the very good quality
of the glasses bundled with the NuView. The glasses are manufactured by
NuVision and they call them 3D-Spex. The glasses have very good transmission
(they let a lot of light through in the clear state) and a very good
extinction ratio (the ratio between the amount of light they let through
in the off and on states) which determines how much ghosting you see (due
to the glasses).
Since the image seen through the glasses is still quite bright, the 25Hz
flicker seen by the glasses (half PAL 50Hz) is much more evident than
shutter glasses of the past (e.g. Sega, Nintendo).
Flicker is more perceptible the brighter the image is (and the lower
the frequency).
To reduce the flicker to an acceptable level with your existing equipment
you could: (1) turn off or reduce the room lighting, (2) place neutral
density filters over the front of the glasses or (3) reduce the
brightness of the TV.
Another solution entirely to remove the flicker of 50Hz stereo is to
use a device called a 3D scan converter which increases the display
rate from 50Hz to 100Hz, but these systems will set you back several
thousands of dollars.
Cheers.
