I don't think this is possible, even in the digest case.  

In non-digest mode, for all mail readers I know of, you only "need"
to read the subject line. 

For digest mode, it's almost the same but one will have to scroll past
the body of the message (even then assuming one isn't using a digest
splitter) where one doesn't have to *read* it to scroll past it.

P.S. - I think everybody wants a single small list that's exactly tuned
       to their wants (and changes as their wants change).  Actually,
       there is a way to do this in a controlled environment using 
       a mailing list program which all on the list would have to use,
       perhaps a website could do this (basically have a single list
       with a list-custom set of subject categories such that each
       person would "click-choose" their current interests in a config
       setup panel, and each new thread would be categorized by the
       sender (with the same sub-category checklist) when initiated.).
       It would have the maintenance of a single list (including 
       archiving) and allow easy low-maintenance changes.  A posting
       could be assigned to mulitiple subcategories.
