Yes - Springer-V is a (most definitely) for profit, gouge the
consumer, publisher.

About 20 years ago at a Computer Science education conference, I 
was potentially interested in adopting one of their texts for a class,
so I asked for an examination copy. It is generally the custom that
a copy is given to an instructor gratis. They wanted me to pay full
retail on it. I told them that I would *NEVER* adopt a S-V
book as a text, and I never have.

Of course, it doesn't seem to have hurt them noticibly :-)
